Week 7

Black History Hero –

As part of our work for Black History Month, the children have been learning about Barack Obama, the first African American President of the United States. They researched his life, achievements, and the positive impact he made on history. Using their findings, the children created informative and eye-catching posters to celebrate his inspiring story. This activity helped them understand the importance of perseverance, equality, and leadership — and sparked some great discussions about how one person can make a real difference in the world.

Commando Jo’s

This week in COJO’s, the children took on an exciting team challenge — building shelters that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Himalayas! Working together, they had to plan, problem-solve, and communicate effectively to create a sturdy and weatherproof design.

The activity encouraged teamwork, resilience, and creativity, as each group tested their shelter’s strength and discussed what worked well and what could be improved. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their cooperation and communication skills in a fun, hands-on way!

Week 6

💛 Wear Yellow for Mental Health Day 💛

On Friday, our school joined thousands of others across the country in wearing yellow to raise awareness for World Mental Health Day. The bright sea of yellow across classrooms and corridors was a powerful reminder that even small acts can make a big difference.

The day was all about showing kindness, supporting one another, and reminding ourselves that it’s okay not to be okay. Throughout the day, pupils took part in activities and discussions about how to look after their mental health — from talking about feelings and practising gratitude, to sharing ways to relax and unwind when things feel tough.

It was wonderful to see so many smiles, thoughtful conversations, and creative touches of yellow everywhere — from t-shirts and socks to ribbons and hairbands!

A huge thank you to everyone who got involved and helped make the day so special. Together, we are helping to create a school community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

Science

This week in Science, Year 4 explored the fascinating world of sound and pitch. Linking Science with Music, we investigated how different sounds are made and how the pitch of a note can change depending on the instrument and how it’s played.

Using glockenspiels and xylophones, the children discovered that shorter, smaller bars create higher-pitched sounds, while longer, larger bars make lower-pitched ones. They listened carefully, compared notes, and discussed how vibrations affect what we hear.

To put their new knowledge into practice, Year 4 even had a go at performing “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars and a bit of Queen – combining science, music, and teamwork for a fun and lively lesson!

Week 5

Today, Year 4 took on the challenge of crossing the mighty Himalayas! Working in small expedition teams, we had to imagine we were brave explorers travelling across freezing mountains and icy winds. Our task was to get safely from one side of the Himalayas to the other, using only ladders as bridges.

First, we had to plan our route carefully, thinking about which ladders were safest and how we could balance without slipping. Next, we worked together to hold the ladders steady, giving each other encouragement as teammates crossed. Sometimes it was tricky, and we had to show resilience and bravery when the ladders wobbled, but we never gave up.

By the end of the mission, every team had managed to cross the dangerous mountain path. We showed teamwork, problem-solving, resilience and communication, proving that we could achieve more when we supported each other.

Week 4

This week in Year 4, the children have been learning how to use the column method for addition with regrouping. They have practised setting out numbers carefully in place-value columns (ones, tens, hundreds and thousands) and adding from right to left.

When the total in a column is 10 or more, the children regroup by carrying into the next column. For example, if they add 7 and 8 to make 15, they place the 5 in the ones column and carry the 1 into the tens column.

To support understanding, the class have been using place-value counters and base-10 equipment to show what happens when numbers are regrouped. They are now becoming more confident in applying the method to numbers with up to four digits.

This skill is important because it gives children a reliable written strategy for solving larger addition problems, builds on their knowledge of place value, and helps them explain and check their answers clearly.

Week 3

This week, Year 4 have been exploring the fascinating world of Greek myths. We have focused on the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, learning how myths were used by the Ancient Greeks to explain their beliefs, values, and traditions. Children have retold the myth in their own words, using expanded noun phrases, powerful verbs, and varied sentence structures to bring the story to life.

Through drama, discussion, and writing, pupils have explored the character of Theseus, his bravery, and his clever plan to defeat the Minotaur. They have also examined the Labyrinth, considering what it might have been like to face such a daunting challenge. Alongside storytelling, the children have been learning how myths connect to history, geography, and culture in Ancient Greece.

This unit has inspired some imaginative writing, as children have begun to create their own mythical beasts and quests, drawing on the themes of heroism, challenge, and courage found in traditional myths.

Week 2

As part of our history and English curriculum, pupils explore the fascinating world of Ancient Greek myths by designing and sculpting their own mythical creatures from clay. This creative activity sparks imagination and helps children to understand how myths were used to explain the world. Once their creatures are made, pupils use them as inspiration for a descriptive writing task, bringing their legends to life through powerful vocabulary and storytelling. The combination of art and writing encourages creativity, critical thinking, and cross-curricular learning in an exciting, hands-on way.

Week 1

Teamwork & Communication Puzzle Challenge

As part of our PSHE curriculum, pupils take part in engaging puzzle activities designed to strengthen teamwork and communication skills. Working in small groups, children are set fun problem-solving challenges where success depends on listening carefully, sharing ideas clearly, and supporting one another. Each puzzle encourages collaboration, patience, and resilience, helping pupils to develop the essential life skills of cooperation and respectful communication in an enjoyable, hands-on way.
