Welcome to
Park Spring Primary School

‘Achieving Together ● Inspired To Be Successful’

PE

At Park Spring our children will have the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to take part in physical activities in order to develop healthy lifestyle behaviours.

To support pupils wellbeing, our curriculum teaches pupils the importance of eating and exercising well. We also teach how to exercise safely. Parents experience their child’s learning first hand at our annual Sports Day and we work with community organisations such as Leeds Rhinos and Leeds United Foundations to raise awareness of key issues through assemblies and events. All curricular activities and experiences are available to all pupils without charge. PE lessons support conflict resolution and Physical, Cognitive, Social, Creative, Health and fitness and Personal skills are incorporated into the curriculum.

We have a rich and broad extra-curricular offer as well as planned and sequenced trips to residential opportunities, camping, youth-hostelling and outward-bound stays. The PE curriculum supports the children to achieve together and be inspired to be successful through the use of a well-structured series of lessons that focus on key skills and skill application.

PE Units of Work

All PE learning is based on the National Curriculum and is planned using adaptations of the REAL PE scheme and the Progression of Skills and Knowledge in PE  developed by the Leeds Well School Partnership.

PE lessons take place twice weekly with one lesson being based on Key Skills and one on Skill Application. The knowledge builds each year until Year 6 when all lessons are based on applying the skills learned. For example activities leading to games would include;

In Reception I can steer a ball along the ground with hands, feet, body parts or a bat.

In Year 1 I can track and receive a ball.

In Year 2 I can show some control when hitting a ball.

In Year 3 I can move with a ball, catch a ball, hit and strike a ball.

In Year 4 I can recognise how to defend or intercept the ball.

In Year 5 I can understand how to keep and win back possession of the ball effectively in a team game.

In Year 6 I can use ball skills in various ways in a game situation, and link these skills together effectively with fluency.

Extra-curricular competitions and events.

We take part in many extra-curricular competitions and events. Here are some of the latest events that we have attended;

Summer 1 2022

Who has heard of Pickleball? We now have some Pickleball experts at Park Spring as some of our KS2 children attended an event at John Charles Centre for Sport and found out all about this inclusive activity! Everyone had great fun and learned a lot about the rules and skills of this exciting new sport.

Some of our Year 6s went to John Charles Centre for Sport to take part in a triathlon event. They had a great time swimming, cycling and running and represented Park Spring really well.

Two teams of Year 6 footballers went to Co-op Academy Priesthorpe to play in a tournament. They did really well, playing short matches of only 5 minutes and being really patient when we had to sit out for matches. Well done to all the children that took part!

A group of Year 4 children took part in a mini Football tournament at Co-op Priesthorpe Academy. They represented Park Spring really well and are all our Sports Stars of the Week for their great behaviour but also for their fair play. They did not concede a goal, drawing 0-0, then winning 4-0, 2-0 and 4-0 and so winning the tournament overall!

A small group of children from Year 4 took part in a ‘Come and Try’ Hockey event at Crawshaw School. They did 5 different skills including shooting and dribbling and then had a match against another school that ended 1-1. The children represented Park Spring really well, we all had a great time and we really improved our hockey skills!

Spring 2 2022

A group of Year 3 and 4 pupils attended a Cheer Dance event at John Charles Centre for Sport. All the children represented the school really well and, most importantly, had fun! Miss Horner runs an after school Cheer club and we are looking forward to putting on a performance in school too!

Spring 1 2022

We had a true Park Springer representing our school in the Leeds Cross Country finals at Temple Newsam. Daisy H went along to the races that were held for the winners of the local Cross Country events that were held earlier in the year. She ran a really good race and we are now looking forward to making up a team for the next event! Well done Daisy!

Autumn 2 2021

We had a group of children attend an Inclusion Bowling event this half term at Hollywood Bowl in Kirkstall. They had a great time and represented the school really well.

We also had some great PE lessons, including Dance, Gymnastics and lots of balancing! In Year 2 we learned about all the different types of roll that we can do. Here are videos of examples of our learning. Do you know what type of roll they are doing?

Autumn 1 2021

It is great to be able to do PE in our classes again with all the equipment and lovely to see our coaches from Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos Foundations back coaching our classes.

It is also great to be able to take part in competitions out of school again. Here are some photographs of a Cross Country event that we took part in – we even got a gold medal in the Year 3/4 girls race! Great running by everyone!
