‘Achieving Together ● Inspired To Be Successful’

Writing

Implementation

At Park Spring we follow a mastery approach to writing. Writing is taught 5 times a week across the school. Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and exciting experiences and events as a hook into writing. Pupils in all year groups are given lots of varied opportunities for writing.

EYFS

At Park Spring pupils are encouraged from an early age to develop their physical skills in order for them to become successful writers. This is done through creative use of our indoor and outdoor areas to develop their gross motor skills through imaginative, interactive, physical play. Children are taught to refine and develop their fine motor skills in weekly sessions of dough disco and finger gym.

Phonics is an integral part of our curriculum and children are taught daily using the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme. This consistent and systematic teaching of phonics ensures that all children have the phonemic and grapheme knowledge which they need in order to become confident and successful as writers.

Oracy remains at the heart of EYFS and pupils are actively encouraged to form relationships and build communication skills. Vocabulary is taught and modelled across the curriculum. This focus on communication skills ensures that all pupils can share ideas and orally compose simple captions, sentences and narratives.

KS1

At Park Spring we continue to inspire children to become good writers by teaching fun, interactive lessons. Writing topics always begin with an experience, event or high quality text which inspires and enthuses the children.

We teach daily high quality phonics and spelling lessons which ensure that children have the basic skills necessary needed to become good writers.

Handwriting lessons are taught daily where children are taught to refine and perfect their letter formation which then enables them to write more freely, legibly and confidently in all lessons.

Transcription and composition is taught through our writing units and children are given lots of opportunities to practise and perfect basic skills.

Alongside this, we intertwine our love of reading by using good quality texts and stories to inspire children to become authors and create their own pieces of writing.

Oracy is an essential part of the writing curriculum and children are encouraged and helped to communicate their ideas during group and partner activities. They enjoy participating in role play. This helps them to articulate their ideas in order to be able to compose sentences and simple texts. We strive to promote collaborative learning in every classroom.

KS2

As children move into KS2 we continue to enthuse and encourage  children to be writers in our daily writing lessons. Our topics always start with an experience, visit or high quality text so that children are excited and have a purpose and audience to write for.

At Park Spring we continue to teach a daily spelling lesson in KS2. This spelling knowledge ensures that the children can confidently choose and use adventurous and interesting vocabulary in their writing.

Grammar is interweaved into writing lessons so that all pupils are given the opportunity to practise skills at a sentence level and then are given the chance to apply these skills when writing longer pieces for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Handwriting is delivered three times a week for years 3 – 5 so that all children can produce writing which is neat and high quality and so that all pupils can feel proud of their writing.
