Mayan hook day in Year 6

This term our topic is The Mayan’s. We had our hook day on Thursday 18th January where we learnt about Mayan hieroglyphics, Mayan masks and Mayan temples. We loved designing our own Mayan temples, as well as writing our name and creating secret messages using the hieroglyphics. We also designed our own temples and tried to create intricate designs replicate the ones seen at Chicha Itza.

The Wolf Brother celebration event was great yesterday and both the parents and pupils loved completing the quiz. Thank you to everyone that attended. We cannot wait to see you at our next event.

Yesterday, Year 6 had an amazing Christmas party. We enjoyed our party food – thank you parents for your contributions! We also completed the After Eight challenge, got very competitive in the chocolate challenge and quiz, played party games and laughed a lot! We hope you liked the children’s calendars too.

Merry Christmas!

Year 6 decide to link their topic to their calendars this year. They created a beautiful background using paints and a swirling technique. They then designed their on Stone Henge rocks and placed them on the card. We hope that their families enjoy them as we think they are absolutely stunning!

6a have been getting into the Christmas spirit and creating their Christmas cards for their loved ones. We used our art books to practice our skills before completing it on our actual card. I hope everyone they give one to loves them!

On Monday Year 5 and 6 visited the church to celebrate Christmas by singing songs and listen to some children retell the birth of Jesus.

Year 6 have had the most incredible time at Dobroyd! We’ve all overcome some fears, and challenged ourselves to achieve as much as possible in our 3 days away. We are absolutely blown away by the kindness, support and encouragement the children have given each other, and their team work skills have massively improved. We’re very proud of them. Here are some pictures of us enjoying caving, archery, quest challenges, rock climbing, crate building, zip line, the infamous piranha pool, night line, canoeing, trapeze, the dungeon, giant swing and more!

On Friday, Year 6 had a visit from Emily who works at the Discovery Center in Leeds. We looked at and discussed Stone Age artefacts; the children loved holding them. We excavated some artefacts from a sand tray using paintbrushes. Then finally we looked at a skeleton and the artefacts around it to decide whether this person was rich or poor and what occupation they might have had.

Year 6 have enjoyed their Stone Age day today and learned loads! Here they are dissecting Stone Age poo to learn about what a Stone Age diet was like. They even tried some of the ingredients that they discovered!

Next, they learned about cave paintings and how this historical evidence tells us about their hunting skills and musical talents. We turned the tables onto their sides to look like a cave wall and turned out the lights.

Finally, we found out about Stonehenge, discussed and debated theories on why and how it was built, and then had a go at making mini Stonehenge from biscuits!

Year 6 had a surprise in the nature garden today when they found a whole host of Stone Age arrow flints and even Stone Age fossilised poo! Some were a little wary about touching the poo, but a great time was had by all, an we are very excited by the things we have found. We will be writing newspaper reports about our incredible discovery soon thanks to the help of local newsreader Amanda Harper who came in last week.
