‘Achieving Together ● Inspired To Be Successful’

Here are our completed Day of the Dead skulls! The children moulded them from clay, left them to dry and then painted them. They’ve put a lot of time and effort into these and they look fantastic!

Our bubble has been busy learning about the day of the dead – the festival known as Dia De Los Muertos. We’ve written an information text about it, learning as much as we could from videos, websites and stories.

Then we made clay skulls! When these are dry we’ll paint them.

They’ve done some brilliant learning this week and I’m so proud of them for how they’ve come back into school with a positive, cheerful attitude!

It has been great to have some year 6 children back in school! They love their new hoodies!

We have been completing some learning on the home learning timetable, a safety poster and also doing a sports challenge that Mrs Fotherby has given us! Keep an eye on your emails for more information…

We have had a great day today, all linked to reading! We had a great assembly with a whole school story – We’re Going on a Book Hunt! Mr Barker, Mrs Gunning and Mrs Digby were sorted into Hogwarts Houses by the sorting hat, we had a whole school sorting hat teacher swap. We also had lots of discussions about books, created magnificent art inspired by our class readers and filled in feathers to create a whole school display (watch this space) of why we love reading and why reading is important… phew!

Year 6 loved their focus on The Viewer – a fantastic book that really gripped their imagination – they couldn’t wait to read on !

It has been lovely to see so many children swap books, before school, during the day, during lunch time, after school… so great that the children are so keen to read and discover new books. I have had some lovely conversations with parents, staff and children about how we are all inspiring each other to read more and why it’s so important!

It was great to see lots of children swapping books and reading at lunch time!

Lola in year 6 has helped her friend to get a library card and swapped a book to read to her cousin today, it’s lovely to see Macauley reading a book he loves that he got from the library. Harvey in year 5 has inspired others to read different books and is going to be a reading ambassador. George in year 3 has swapped lots of books with Mrs Horan and has inspired lots of children in his class to read. Mr Shaw in year 4 has inspired his class to read and swap books on a regular basis.  The children in year 2 were really excited to create beautiful flower pictures based on the secret garden.

Year 5 fused art and poetry – inspired by their poetry class reader.

They created some great front covers inspired by their other class reader – The Explorer. They are going to use these to go on the front of their Explorer inspired writing.

In nursery today it was a real pleasure to read to them, they spoke in full sentences, listened carefully and we had a really interesting conversation about how you grow when you are asleep and we all agreed that the pigeon really needed to go to bed – NOT stay up late!

In year 6 the children created some great art inspired by The Viewer.

In year 4 they created Iron Man pictures – using the book and my pictures inspired by the book…

Year 3 created some fantastic pictures inspired by Kensuke’s Kingdom.

Year 2 created some great pictures inspired by the Secret Garden.

A fantastic day! Thank you for your support – letting your children bring books to swap and listening to your children read at home!

Year 6 have been learning about Ernest Shackleton’s adventures to Antarctica in 1914, and the brave team of men who sailed there with the aim of crossing Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole, for the first time.

Today. we had a visit from John, whose great uncle (Leonard Hussey, see below with banjo!) was a member of Ernest Shackleton’s crew. John had so much interesting information to share, as well as pictures and stories about his uncle. We are unbelievable lucky to have had the chance to speak with someone who knew someone who was actually there and the children were hooked from beginning to end.

Thank you John for giving us your time and energy today, it brought the history to life in a way nothing else could have!

Yesterday, we visited the Leeds library. The children got a library card and took out some books. They were so excited that they wanted to read them straight away, some were even seen reading them on the train home and at dinner time! A nice man (from the library) took us on a lovely tour and we found out lots of interesting information about its history.

We also had the opportunity to visit the Leeds Art Gallery, where the children got to look at paintings, write down the artists that they enjoyed looking at and even got to sketch some in their sketch books.

Yesterday, the Year 6 children who had earnt their reward this half term for their fantastic attitude to learning and for the amount of effort they put in went on a trip to Leeds. The children went ice skating. There were lots of falling so we will have some bruised children today but each and every one of them had a fabulous time!

Year 6 were introduced to their new class book today. 6B are reading The Rain Player. It is a story about Maya times, which links to our topic and in 6A, they are reading The Viewer, which is a scary, dark story that links with our spooky writing.Thank you to all the parents who came and read with their child, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
