5b Cosmic Writing

Year 5 have worked tirelessly this term, writing, improving and writing again in their English lessons. Their latest published piece was a letter written from the viewpoint of the main character Liam. I was really impressed with the class’ resilience in making sure their writing was the best it could be, and they were also extremely funny!

On Monday Year 5 and 6 visited the church to celebrate Christmas by singing songs and listen to some children retell the birth of Jesus.

Year 5 were treated today from a visit from a mobile Planetarium! It was absolutely fantastic. We were immersed in our Solar System, Galaxy, Universe… We were treated to 360 views of space and found out LOTS of new information about our space topic. We couldn’t take many photos with it being so dark…but I tried to get a sneaky one inside!

The children had a great time – make sure you ask them lots of questions about what we discovered!

Year 5 are learning how to download and save documents from the internet. Here is the link for our lesson next week:

We will be downloading it at school so you don’t need to do anything at home 🙂

Watch this space to find out how we do!

Mrs McNaboe and Mr Baker

It was lovely to see the year 5 children enthused about reading yesterday. They shared our class story ‘Viking Boy’, by Tony Bradman before reading their favourite book to their adults. The rest of us read to each other. It was really nice to see the children just enjoying reading and getting lost in a good book.

In 5b, we have been learning about forces. We have investigated water and air resistance, gravity, friction and yesterday we designed and created our own pulley systems! The children had to get the paper plate ‘ski lift’ from one place to another, only using force via pulleys. This was some of their attempts:

Year 5 went on a trip to discover Viking battle tactics, archaeological digs, bones and fossils and how the Vikings used to live. We started at the DIG centre where we were transformed into archaeologists, followed by the Jorvik Viking centre, where we went on a ride back in time to discover what every day life was like for the Vikings. (We even saw the biggest fossilised human poo!) The children were fantastic, engrossed and asking lots of questions – although we impressed the guides with how much we already knew.

In Year 5, we have been making Viking weapons in Clay. We designed and reviewed before getting our hands in and crafting our weapons…
