‘Achieving Together ● Inspired To Be Successful’

Year 5’s author visit

Year 5 had a visit from the incredible author Kate Pankhurst, writer and illustrator of the Fantastically Great Women series of books. She spoke of her inspirations for how she came up with the ideas for her books, and we had an art lesson where she taught us to draw our own illustrations! The children had a fantastic time, one even saying it was the best day at school she’d ever had! Thank you Kate, for a truly fun and engaging visit, you’ve inspired the next generation of writers.

Inspiration and Aspiration Program

So as part of developing our pupils and preparing them for life after Park Spring we are really keen that pupils are INSPIRED to be successful – each and every day at school and that we open up the world of careers that they may wish to pursue once they leave education.

We are now working with Glentrool Estate management a Leeds based company that is run by Jeremy Nolan and his family. You might know that each year Glentrool pay for children to attend Nell Bank outward bound centre in Ilkley and at Christmas paid for all of KS2 to go to the Alhambra to watch the panto.

8 Y5 pupils won the competition of writing a letter to Jeremy in order that they could attend a business lunch and visit his head office. During our lunch Jeremy gave the children guidance and advice on how they can reach their own business goal. You will hear a lot more about this – but Y5 have been set the challenge of raising ALL the money required to pay for their Y6 hoodies. The reward being that AS SOON as they have raised the funds they are able to wear their hoodies!

Below you can see some pictures of our amazing day!

What an amazing day we had in Jorvik yesterday! Children were greeted to the underground Viking world of Jorvik city, buried under the city of York. We went on an amazing ride through an old Viking settlement, before being shown some real artefacts. After that, a Viking showed us how to make our own Viking coins, before we headed across York to the DIG centre. There, we were shown artefacts which had been found all around York, including Roman and Victorian treasure. Then, we took part in our own excavation, digging up everything we could find. Finally, we finished by looking at some Viking weapons!

Years 3,4,5 an 6 were so lucky to go see Sleeping Beauty yesterday at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. The children really enjoyed the show, and smiled and laughed lots. We are very grateful for Jeremy Nolan, who the children saw there as this was funded by him. We even got a ice lolly at the interval. Thank you!

Last week, Year 5 had the lucky chance to work with Leeds City Council’s Road Safety Team. This involved having some training on how to travel around in the playground, before we took Year 5 out onto the roads to put their skills to the test.

Well done to our Black History Month competition winners and entries! I am incredibly proud of your hard work and enthusiasm in researching your chosen hero and presenting them, AND in your own time. Amazing!
A big well done to Lawson and Bobby (not pictured).
Miss Horner

Yesterday in Year 5, we made some super racing cars as part of our DT topic. This was an exciting DT day, which involved using saws, sandpaper and axles – along with our electricity knowledge from Year 4, to create a working car.

We had the following teams:

  • Speeding Club
  • Black Phantoms
  • Dragon Squad
  • Mr Krabs Racing Club
  • Patrick’s Stars

A huge well done to everyone for taking part and making the day fun!

In Year 5 this week, we have begun our new DT topic “Which combination of gears would make the vehicle travel fastest?”

We have begun by making our first set of working gears, powered by a motor. It was great to see Year 5’s problem solving put to the test, and some amazing results!

The Summer Reading Challenge at Pudsey Library has began, please watch this video to find out more about the challenge. Kate at the library is looking forward to seeing you over the Summer!

Year 5 have been making Yayoi Kusama inspired artwork based on the famous ‘Pumpkin’

We designed the pumpkin first and then sculpted it using clay. Finally, we painted them and created a box to finish the design. Below are some of our examples:
