Week 5

This week in Year 5, we have been exploring our creativity and developing new skills across the curriculum. In science, the children imagined and designed their own planets using what they’ve learned in our space topic. They began by sketching out their planet ideas before starting to build them using papier-mâché – showing fantastic originality and teamwork. In maths, we continued our work on fractions, focusing on converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and back again. In English, we started learning about the active and passive voice and how each can change the focus of a sentence. In Spanish, we continued practising phonemes and improving our pronunciation. A busy and exciting week of learning!

Week 4

Year 5 have had a jam packed and exciting week! In PSHE, we have been learning about the media and discussing what makes a positive role model. In science, as part of our space topic, the children explored how time zones work around the world. We’ve also been rehearsing our Christmas songs in singing assembly, filling the hall with festive cheer. In Spanish, we have begun learning phonemes, and the children really enjoyed the challenge and showed great success.

Week 3

It has been a very busy and exciting week in Year 5! In Geography, we have begun our new topic on coasts, exploring how they are formed and what makes each coastline unique. In Science, we learned how we get years, weeks and days, as well as how the seasons change as part of our Space topic. In Maths, we started our work on fractions, building our confidence with parts of a whole and making equivalent fractions. We have also been busy writers this week, creating our own space-themed poems using metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole and rhyming patterns. What a fantastic and productive week it has been!

Week 2

Year 5 have had an exciting time recently taking part in two fantastic LEGO workshops! The first was with Willmott Dixon, where pupils became mini engineers, learning all about bridge design and construction before building their very own LEGO bridges. The second workshop was with Yorkshire Water, where the children discovered how pipe blockages can cause real problems in our water systems. They then took on the challenge of building and coding their own LEGO robots to move and remove blockages – combining creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. It was a brilliant hands-on learning experience that brought STEM to life!

Week 1

Wow, what a first week back, we have had a super busy week!

Year 5 had an out-of-this-world experience this week when the Wonder Dome visited our school! The immersive planetarium show sparked our curiosity and set the perfect scene for our new science topic. Pupils were fascinated by the journey through space, exploring planets, stars, and galaxies – it was a fantastic hook to launch our learning!

We have been learning about Black History and exploring the vibrant influence of the West Indies on the UK. As part of our celebrations, Year 5 children took part in an energetic Boomchickaboom workshop – using rhythm, movement, and music to celebrate Caribbean culture and the spirit of Carnival. It was a joyful way to learn about history, unity, and the power of music to bring people together!

Autumn 1

Week 5

Year 5 conducted a very exciting investigation into air resistance. We created parachutes of different sizes in small groups using bin bags and string, attached a weight and then released them from a height. This helped us to investigate the question ‘Does the size of the parachute affect the amount of air resistance acting upon it?’.

Week 4

Have a look at some of the beautiful sketches we have created in Art this week!

Week 3

Another brilliant week for Year 5. We have created incredible spooky setting descriptions in writing and continued our place value learning in maths.

In science, we conducted an investigation to see which ball would land first when released from the same height. This helped us to explore the concept of gravity and the fundamental work of Sir Isaac Newton. We were surprised to learn that a tennis ball and a football would land at exactly the same time!

Week 2

This week Year 5 took part in a team building school trip to Nell Bank, where we completed various challenges to test our abilities to remain calm under pressure and work together successfully. We battled the rain and didn’t let it spoil our fun!

In maths, we started learning about numbers to 1,000,000 and enjoyed working practically on our tables to explore this concept.

Week 1

Welcome back to a new academic year!

This week we have focused on setting new routines and re-establishing basic skills in our new classrooms. We have started a new class text called The Wolves In The Walls by Neil Gaiman and have enjoyed getting familiar with the spooky story. We are excited to create spooky setting descriptions.
