At Park Spring Primary, we inspire our pupils to be successful and to grow, know, and thrive as thoughtful, respectful members of a diverse society. We follow the ‘Believing and Belonging in West Yorkshire: The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Calderdale, Kirklees and Leeds’ as the foundation of our Religious Education curriculum.
We believe the Believing and Belonging syllabus provides an engaging, inclusive, and comprehensive framework that enables pupils to know about religion and worldviews representative of our multi-diverse city, grow in understanding, empathy, and respect, and thrive as open-minded and reflective learners. Through RE, we actively promote tolerance, kindness, and mutual respect within our school community and beyond. Our teaching is rooted in key questions, enquiry, and investigation, supporting pupils to think deeply and confidently.
Our Religious Education curriculum is structured around six key pathways:
In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils explore a wide range of religions and worldviews, including Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, and non-religious worldviews. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), learning focuses primarily on Christianity, alongside other beliefs and cultures that reflect the children’s immediate environment and unique cultural backgrounds. RE learning in EYFS is centred around key celebrations and is enriched through play and continuous provision, allowing children to grow in curiosity, know about the world around them, and thrive through meaningful experiences.
Our approach does not make assumptions about the religious backgrounds, beliefs, or values of children or staff. We celebrate the diversity of our school community and encourage individuals to share their experiences in a safe and respectful environment.
We are fortunate to have strong links with St Mark’s Methodist Church, as well as opportunities to visit a synagogue, mosque, and to engage with a Sikh visitor. These first-hand experiences help pupils know more about lived religion, grow in understanding through real-world encounters, and thrive as engaged and respectful learners. Other first hand experiences include food tasting, themed celebration days and immersive drop down days to fully embed learning.
The impact of Religious Education at Park Spring Primary is seen in pupils’ secure knowledge of a range of religions and worldviews and their ability to make meaningful connections between beliefs, practices, and lived experiences. As the six key pathways are revisited and built upon throughout KS1 and KS2, pupils demonstrate clear progression in knowledge, vocabulary, and critical thinking.
Pupils leave Park Spring Primary able to articulate their own views with confidence and respect, while demonstrating a secure understanding of why people may choose to follow, or not follow, a religion. They show empathy, curiosity, and openness when engaging with beliefs and practices different from their own, reflecting their ability to grow in understanding, know more about themselves and others, and thrive within a diverse society.
RE has a strong impact on pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. Pupils are able to reflect thoughtfully on fundamental questions, explore how religious and non-religious worldviews respond to these questions, and consider how these ideas influence values, behaviour, and identity. They engage confidently in respectful discussion and demonstrate the skills needed for active citizenship.
By the end of their primary education, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of learning. They have developed the knowledge, attitudes, and transferable skills required for lifelong learning, future employment, and participation in modern Britain. The impact of RE is evident in pupils who are reflective, respectful, and informed—ready to grow, know, and thrive in an interconnected world.
