We began our Black History Month STUDY WEEK in style on Monday, when Faye from Carnival company BOOMCHIKKABOOK came in to tell us all about the history of Carnival and the history of Carnival in Leeds. We learnt that the original carnival was to celebrate EMANCIPATION from SLAVERY. We learnt that Arthur France and his friends missed carnival so much after moving to England that they decided to create their own! We learnt that Leeds Carnival is the oldest and biggest in EUROPE! And we learn that CARNIVAL is made up of four important parts:
… and then Y5 and Y2 learnt that they loved CARNIVAL!!! Thank you to Faye from BOOMCHIKKABOOM – she did a brilliant job of bringing our studies to life. I hope some of you make the journey across Leeds next summer with your families to celebrate in style and look out for Faye and her troupe next summer! We look forward to welcoming Faye back next year during our Black History studies.
