Today in science, 4B tested the state of different foods, turning them from solids to liquids – and back again!
First, we had to weigh out 80g of chocolate and 80g of butter using our knowledge of scales.
After we had measured the correct amount, we created a bain marie to help us melt both the chocolate and butter by applying heat. Which would melt the quickest?
After around 5 minutes, the butter had clearly become a liquid, while the chocolate still looked more or a solid. However, when touching the chocolate, it was clear to see that it was more of a liquid.
We then wondered if we could change the liquid back into a solid state – by cooling and freezing! After around 5 minutes in the freezer, both of our liquids had become more solid – although the butter still had a liquid center!
